Amitav Ghosh among top 10 finalists for Man Booker International Prize Indian author Amitav Ghosh is among the 10 finalists for this year’s Man Booker International Prize. Kolkata born, 58-year-old Mr. Ghosh had narrowly missed out on the Booker Prize back in 2008 when he was shortlisted for his work “Sea of Poppies”. The Man Booker International Prize is an international literary award given every two years to a living author of any nationality for a body of work published in English or generally available in English translation. Shashi Kapoor gets Dadasaheb Phalke Award Shashi Kapoor, the veteran actor and producer was chosen for the 46th edition of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, 2014; It is the most prestigious film award in India. This award is conferred by the Government of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. He is best-known for his performances in Hindi films like ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’, ‘Deewar’, ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’,‘Trishul’ and ‘Kabhi Kabhie’. India overtakes US to become the third-largest steel producer India has become the third-largest steel producer in the world by overtaking the United States (US) with a production of 14.56 million tonnes (MT) in first two months of the year. Activist Rajendra Singh wins Stockholm Water Prize 2015 Rajendra Singh, an eminent environment activist, has been conferrefd the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize this year for his innovative water restoration efforts and extraordinary courage to empower communities in Indian villages. He is popularly known as ‘Water Man’ of India. He has earlier been awarded the Ramon Magsaysay award in 2001 for his work on community-based water harvesting and water management. Nobel winner Venky Ramakrishnan to head Royal Society India-born Nobel laureate Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has been confirmed as president elect of Britain’s prestigious Royal Society. Ramakrishnan will take over from geneticist Paul Nurse, also a Nobel laureate, on 1 December 2015. Ramakrishnan is currently deputy director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory for Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK. In 2009, Ramakrishnan was awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering the precise structure of ribosomes i.e. the molecular machines that manufacture proteins inside all living cells. He shared this Prize with Tom Steitz and Ada Yonath. He was awarded a knighthood in 2012 and Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine in 2007.
