Real:  not an imitation or artificial, genuine, original
Synonyms: authentic, bona-fide, echt, kosher, veritable

  • My grandmother, who was born in Italy, makes the most authentic Italian meals for our family dinners

Fake: a copy, not genuine or original
Synonyms: counterfeit, ersatz, facsimile, faux, feign, spurious

  • The man was arrestedd for making counterfeit currency.
  • The jeweller immediately noticed the flaws in the ersatz diamond.
  • He offered a facsimile of the original painting for a much discounted price.
  • The politician’s faux concern for the well being of voters could not fool many.
  • Christina would feign her laughs at lame jokes only to make the comedian feel better.
  • The con artist made a spurious claim about being a member of the royal family.
