History of Nobel Prize:

The Nobel Prizes are annual awards bestowed by Scandinavian committees in different fields. The will of the Swedish chemist, Alfred Nobel, the inventor of “Dynamite” established the prize in 1895. The prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace were first awarded in the year 1901.

  • The Peace prize is awarded in Oslo (capital of Norway) while the other prizes are awarded in Stockholm (capital of Sweden).
  • In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank instituted an award that is often associated with Nobel prizes i.e. the award in Economic Sciences. The first such prize was awarded in 1969. Although it is not an official Nobel Prize, its announcements and presentations are made along with the other prizes.
  • Each Nobel recipient receives a gold medal, a diploma and a sum of money which depends on the income of Nobel’s foundation.
  • The prize is not awarded posthumously and a prize may not be shared among more than three people.
