Union Government launches ‘Sehat’ to provide healthcare facilities in rural areas

A telemedicine initiative dubbed as Sehat has been launched by the Union Government to provide healthcare facilities in rural areas in collaboration with Apollo Hospitals. It will seek to Provide quality and affordable healthcare services as it is one of the emerging needs of citizens in rural areas. Under the Sehat initiative, people will be able to consult  doctors through video link and also order generic drugs. It will use Common Service Centres for delivering tele- consultation services with support from Medanta and Apollo Hospitals in some areas.

GSAT-6 communication satellite successfully placed in orbit

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has successfully placed Communication Satellite GSAT-6 into its intended geosynchronous transfer orbit. It was launched by the indigenously built Geosynchronous Satellite Launched Vehicle (GSLV)- D6 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. GSAT-6 satellite was carrying S-Band and C-Band transponders meant for public and strategic purposes.

Union Cabinet approved amendments in the Central List of Other Backward Classes

The Union Cabinet approved the amendments in the Central List of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in respect of two States Gujarat and Uttarakhand. It has been done as per the  advice received from the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC). Sipai and Patni or Turk Jamat communities in Gujarat and Kahars and Tanwar Singhariyas in Uttarakhand will be added in the list.

Commemorative coins of Rs 125, Rs 10 released in honour of – Former President S Radhakrishna

Prime Minister Narendra Modi released two commemorative coins of 125 rupees and 10 rupees in the memory of first Vice President and second President of India Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. His birthday, 5th September is observed as Teacher’s Day all across India since 1962.

Apurvi Clinches silver at World Cup Finals

Young Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela once again proved herself as she clinched the silver medal in women’s 10m air rifle event of the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Finals  in Munich, Germany. She finished second on the podium after she tallied 206.9, just 0.6 behind Ahmadi Elaheh of Iran. Ahmadi won the gold medal with a tally of 207.5. Andrea Arsovic of Serbia bagged the bronze.

  • Indian-American Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri has been selected for the prestigious 2014 National Humanities Medal. Ms. Lahiri, the author of “The Lowland,” will receive the prize in Washington from US President Barack Obama.
  • Music composer Aadesh Shrivastava who was battling cancer passed away on Saturday, 4th September 2015.
  • The South African city Durban has been selected as the host city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The decision has been made at the Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) general assembly in New Zealand.
  • Kenya has come top of the overall medal table at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing for the first time, with seven gold medals. Kenya also won six silver and three bronze medals, with Jamaica and the US in second and third place respectively.
