Infosys co-founder S Gopalakrishnan launched app ‘Itihaasa’ chronicling Indian IT journey

Infosys co-founder  launched a new app named ‘Itihaasa’ that chronicles Indian IT journey since the 1950s. The app ‘itihaasa’ is one of the largest chronicles of its kind with 600 videos featuring 44 technology stalwarts.
Main highlights of app Itihaasa: 

  • It contains over 37 hours of footage, 350 archived photographs and articles and easy browsing with 12000 tags.
  • It follows the installation of the country’s Arst modern computer in 1955 to crystal gazing on Indian IT in 2040.
  • Through the app users can also hear veterans like F C Kohli, Prof Rajaraman, Prof Mahabala, Narayana Murthy, Azim Premji, S Ramadorai, Nandan Nilekani, N Vittal and others.
  • Users can personalise stories on six dimensions – Time, People, Organisation, Policy, Technical Terms and Place.
  • The app, took about eight months to develop and will be maintained by a team sitting at IIIT-Bengaluru.
  • It has been conceptualised by Kris, as Gopalakrishnan is popularly known, and will be available for free on Apple and Android phones or tablets.

Djokovic, Serena bag top honours at Laureus World Sports awards

Novak Djokovic pipped the likes of Usain Bolt and Lionel Messi to win the ‘Sportsman of the Year’ trophy for a third time, while Serena Williams clinched the top honour in the women’s category at the Laureus World Awards.

  • Djokovic, who won this award in 2012 and ’15, walked away with it for a second successive time after clinching three Grand Slams – Australian, Wimbledon and US Open last year. He was also the finalist in the French Open.
  • Williams was the overwhelming favourite after securing a record 10th nomination and thanks to her three Grand Slams last season, the American notched up her third ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ Laureus trophy.

Nico Rosberg won 2016 Formula 1 Pirelli Chinese Grand Prix

German Formula 1 Mercedes Driver Nico Rosberg  won 2016 Formula 1 Pirelli Chinesen Grand Prix in Shanghai International Circuit.

  • With this, he made a hat-trick by winning all three Grand Prix that were held in 2016.
  • The other Grand Prix include 2016 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix and 2016 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
  • Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany stood second and Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat secured 3 rd place where as Lewis Hamilton finished at seven.

Dipa Karmakar, first Indian woman gymnast to seal Olympics berth

Agartala hailed Dipa Karmakar will be the first Indian women gymnast in the history to qualify for Olympics as she booked a berth for the mega event after a strong performance at the final qualifying and test event.

  • After her stupendous performance Dipa will now receive the sports ministry’s funding of up to Rs.30 lakh under the Target Olympic Scheme.
  • Earlier she won a bronze at the Asian Gymnastics Championships and finished fifth at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships both a first for India.
  • Dipa had also becoming the first woman gymnast to win a medal — a bronze — in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
