Indian Navy’s new destroyer INS Visakhapatnam launched

The Navy’s largest destroyer, INS Visakhapatnam, with enhanced capability to operate in areas tainted by a nuclear, biological and chemical strike, was launched at the Mazagon dock in Mumbai. The ship weighed approximately 3,000 tons during the launch. It will be the first of P15-B stealth destroyers (under Kolkata-class) and will be propelled by four gas turbines.

Nasim Zaidi takes over as the new Chief Election Commissioner

Dr. Nasim Zaidi took over as the 20th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India on 19 April 2015 by replacing H.S. Brahma. Zaidi will have tenure up to July, 2017 when he attains the age of 65. An EC or a CEC has a tenure of six years in office or 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.

Sitaram Yechury Elected as new General Secretary of CPI(M)

Sitaram Yechury was elected as the new General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on 19 April at party’s 21st Congress held in Visakhapatnam. Sitaram Yechury was unanimously elected CPI (M)’s new General Secretary to replace Prakash Karat, who has completed three terms as General Secretary of the party.

Chhurim Sherpa, first woman to climb the Everest summit twice in a week

Chhurim Sherpa (Nepali mountaineer) became the first woman to climb the 8850 metre (29035 feet) Mount Everest summit twice in a week. Sherpa was in news as during her third ascent to Mount Everest she will take a cricket bat and two jerseys of deceased Australian cricketer Phil Hughes. Chhurim’s Everest ascents on May 12 and 19 in 2011 were recognised by the Guinness World Records as a first.  

Liam Livingstone Smashes Record-Breaking 350 in a One-Day Club Match

A 21-year-old English batsman, Liam Livingstone scored 350 off just 138 balls for his team Nantwich in a National Club Championship match against fellow north-west side Caldy. His innings included 34 fours and 27 sixes. His astonishing assault is believed to be the the highest recorded individual score in any form of a one-day match, surpassing the 334 not out made by the then 15-year-old Nikhilesh Surendran in an Indian school fixture in Hyderabad in 2008.

Lewis Hamilton Won The Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, representing Mercedes, won the Bahrain Grand Prix for the second year in a row on April 19. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen (Finland) made his entry into the podium with second place while Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg (Germany) came third.
