Tiger census: Numbers rise from 1,400 to 2,226 in seven years

India’s Tiger count has gone up by more than 30% in the past four years. The study put the number at 2,226, up from 1,706 in 2010 when the last such tiger-counting exercise was undertaken. Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, who released the study, said India is now home to about 70% of tigers in the world. Karnataka has the largest number of 406 tigers, according to this report.

Twitter acquires ZipDial

Marking its first acquisition in India, microblogging site Twitter, on Tuesday, announced the acquisition of Bengaluru-based mobile marketing start-up ZipDial. ZipDial offers services such as missed calls for user verification, alerts and other cases.

TCS become the country’s most profitable private company

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) overtook Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL). The Tata Group owned TCS’ net profits for the quarter ending December 2014 stood at Rs. 5,327.60 crores, compared with RIL’s Rs. 5,256 crores.  RIL has been topping the profitability charts since 1992-93, when it went past Tata Steel in the rankings. However, RIL remains India’s biggest company by sales.

Hindalco coal block: CBI examines former PM Manmohan Singh

The CBI has examined former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in connection with the allocation of the Talabira II coal block in Orissa to Hindalco in 2005, when he held the coal portfolio.

EU lifts ban on Indian mangoes

The seven-month ban on Indian mangoes, imposed last year (on 1 may 2014) by the European Union, has been lifted after the world’s biggest producer made significant improvements in plant health controls and certification system, clearing the way for them to return to the 28-member bloc by March.
