FM Arun Jaitley inaugurates Bandhan Bank as full-fledged scheduled commercial bank in Kolkata. Bandhan Bank becomes India’s first private bank in 11 years. Bandhan is the first microfinance company to transform into a bank.
Ranil Wickremesinghe sworn in PM of Sri Lanka
Ranil Wickremesinghe has sworn-in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka for fourth time. He was administered the oath of office by President Maithripala Sirisena at the oath taking ceremony held at Presidential Secretariat in Colombo. Ranil Wickremesinghe has held the position of Prime Minister of the country on three earlier occasions i.e. in 1993-94, 2002-2004 and from January 2015 to August 2015.
England won 2015 Ashes Test series 3-2
England cricket team won 2015 Ashes Test series, 3-2 against Australia at England. In the fifth and final match of the series, Australia defeated England by an innings and 46 runs at Ovals. England had already clinched the series with victories in three of the first four games. Chris Rogers of Australia and Joe Root of England jointly shared the man of the series award.
Usain Bolt wins world 100m title at World Athletics Championships
Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt has won world 100 metre title in the World Athletics Championships held in Beijing, China. With this victory he retained his 100 metre title which was won earlier in 2009. In the blue riband event, Bolt ran a season’s best of 9.79 seconds winning gold medal. While Justin Gatlin of United States finished at the second spot in 9.80sec, taking silver medal.
Note: Usain Bolt is the first athlete to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records. He is Olympic gold medallist and has won medal in 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympic games in 100 metres.
Ghirmay Ghebreslassie makes marathon history in Beijing
Nineteen-year-old Eritrean athlete Ghirmay Ghebreslassie becomes the youngest winner of the marathon at the World Championships with gold in Beijing. He finished in a time of two hours 12 minutes 27 seconds to secure Eritrea’s first ever World Championship gold medal.
