Activist Rajendra Singh wins Stockholm Water Prize 2015
Rajendra Singh, an eminent environment activist, has been conferrefd the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize this year for his innovative water restoration efforts and extraordinary courage to empower communities in Indian villages. He is popularly known as ‘Water Man’ of India.
- He has earlier been awarded the Ramon Magsaysay award in 2001 for his work on community-based water harvesting and water management.
- Currently he runs an NGO called ‘Tarun Bharat Sangh’ which is based in Kishori-Bhikampura near Sariska Tiger Reserve.
- The Stockholm Water Prize is a global award founded in 1991 and presented annually by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) to an individual, organisation or institution for outstanding water-related achievements.
Renault Nissan Automotive India appoints Colin Macdonald as Managing Director
Colin Macdonald has been appointed as Managing Director (MD) of Renault Nissan Automotive India (RNAIPL). He will assume charge on 1 April 2015. Macdonald will succeed Toshihiko Sano who has been appointed as Senior Vice President of Nissan’s key supplier, Calsonic Kansei in Japan.
Martin Guptill hits highest score in Cricket World Cup History
Martin Guptill, the batsman of New Zealand cricket team, on 21 March 2015 scored the highest-ever score of 237 not out in Cricket World Cup history. He achieved the feat in 2015 World Cup quarter final match against West Indies played at Westpac Trust Stadium, Wellington. He scored 237 off 163 balls. He also became the second cricketer after Chris Gayle of West Indies to score a double century in Cricket World Cup history. Chris Gayle had scored 215 off 147 balls against Zimbabwe.
2022 Football World Cup final to be played in Qatar
The governing body of World Football, FIFA, has announced the date of 2022 World Cup final. It will be played in Qatar on the 18th of December. The event will be held in the winter to avoid the hot temperatures in June and July. FIFA has chosen France to host the 2019 women’s World Cup ahead of South Korea. France will also stage the Under-20 women’s tournament in 2018.
Karnataka thrash Rest of India to retain Irani Cup
Ranji Trophy champions Karnataka retained the Irani Cup by defeating Rest of India by 246 runs on the fourth and penultimate day. Karnataka became only the second team to bag back to back Irani Cup titles. Mumbai had won back to back titles thrice, between 1962-63 to 1963-64, 1969-70 to 1970-71 and 1975-76 to 1976-77.
