The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 comes into force

The Juvenile Justice Act, which allows children aged 16 to 18 years and in conflict with law to be tried as adults in cases of heinous offences, comes into force. The Ministry of Woman and Child Development has passed orders stating that the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015 will be enforceable from January 15, 2016.

Iran nuclear deal: Int sanctions lifted

International sanctions on Iran have been lifted after a watchdog confirmed it had complied with a deal designed to prevent it developing nuclear weapons.

  • Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, whose 2013 election helped launch the Herculean diplomatic effort towards the 14th July Vienna Deal, called it a glorious victory for the patient nation of Iran.
  • These will include sanctions on Iran’s lifeblood oil exports and open up the 80-million-strong country to business.

Anuradha Roy wins DSC Prize for South Asian literature

Indian writer Anuradha Roy has won the on the prestigious $50,000 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature for her novel ‘Sleeping on Jupiter’.

  • She was awarded with prize and a unique trophy by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Colombo.
  • Her novel Sleeping on Jupiter deals with the subject of violence against women with story revolving around girl named Nomi and is set in Jarmuli, a city of temples.

Tsai Ing-wen elected Taiwan’s first female president

Pro-Independence Opposition candidate of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen has been elected as first female and 14th President of Taiwan. Ms Tsai’s victory is the biggest mandate ever won by a DPP president and is only the second-ever victory for the DPP since Taiwan split with China in 1949.

Sania Mirza-Martina Hingis lift Sydney International title

Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis’ awe-inspiring run continued unabated as they lifted their second trophy of the season with the WTA Apia International title after clinching their 30th win a row. It was the 11th tittle for the Indo-Swiss pair.
