Mahatma Gandhi Honoured by UK With a Statue at Parliament Square
A historic bronze statue of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled at the Parliament Square in London. It was unveiled jointly by British Prime Minister David Cameron and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. The statue is placed adjacent to the statues of iconic leaders like Britain’s former Prime Minister Winston Churchill and anti-apartheid icon and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela.
Cyclone PAM hits Vanuatu
Powerful cyclone “Pam” on 14 March 2015 slammed the south Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu. The cyclone Pam is category five tropical storm and has brought destructive 270 kilometre-per-hour winds and torrential rain along with it after it changed it course in westward direction. Vanuatu is located north east of Australia to south west of Hawaii Islands.
Indian Naval Ship Alleppey decommissioned
Indian Naval Ship (INS) Alleppey, a minesweeper ship, was decommissioned at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. INS Alleppey was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 10 June 1980 from USSR. Now, the Indian Navy have only five operational minesweeper vessels ship.
Pakistan tests 1st indigenous armed drone, laser guided missile
Pakistan successfully tested its first indigenous all-weather armed drone named Burraq and a laser guided missile that can strike its targets with pinpoint accuracy named Barq. By successfully testing of Burraq, Pakistan became the 9th country in the World to develop an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) domestically.
Dr. Alka Beotra becomes Member of the Executive Board of WAADS
India’s Dr. Alka Beotra has been nominated as a member of the World Association of Anti-Doping Scientists’ (WAADS) executive board. She is the only Asian in the six-member executive board of WAADS and will have a tenure of 3 years starting from March 2015. At present, Dr. Alka Beotra is Scientific Director of National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL).
Mary Kom to be brand ambassador of Northeast
The central government will appoint Olympic medallist boxer M.C. Mary Kom as the brand ambassador for the Northeast India to promote the region in the rest of the country and abroad. Mary Kom is nicknamed Magnificent Mary. She is Five-time World Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.
