Leander Paes – Martina Hingis win Australian Open mixed-doubles title
Leander Paes and Martina Hingis beat French-Canadian pair of Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor in straight sets (6-4,6-3) in the mixed doubles final in Melbourne. This title is 15th Grand Slam title for both Paes and Hingis. Leander Paes has won 7th mixed doubles titles and 8th doubles Grand Slam titles in his illustrious career. On the other hand Martina Hingis has won her 10th doubles Grand Slam apart from her 5th singles titles. Paes has highest number of Slam victories among Indians, ahead of one-time partner Mahesh Bhupati (12).
Novak Djokovic beats Andy Murray to win fifth Australian Open title
World No.1 Novak Djokovic (Serbia) won the 2015 Australian Open singles title. He defeated Britain’s Andy Murray by 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-0 in the final. It’s the Serb’s 8th Slam title. He becomes first man in Open Era to win 5 Australian Open titles, going past Andre Agassi and Roger Federer (4 each). Djokovic had earlier won the Australian Open titles in 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
PETA announced to create India’s first fenced elephant sanctuary
India’s 1st solar fenced elephant sanctuary will come up near Bengaluru, Karnataka. It was announced by an international animal rights and conservation group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The forested space will allow elephants to move around freely within the secure area.
29th Surajkund International Crafts Mela Begins
The 29th edition of 15-day long Surajkund International Crafts Mela, which will see the participation of 18 countries, began today at Surajkund (Faridabad) in Haryana. This time Lebanon is the “partner nation” of the fair while Chhattisgarh is the “theme state“. Surajkund International Crafts Mela is held every year from 1 to 15 February and has been held continuously since 1987.
Australia beats England to win tri-series final in 112-run victory in Perth
Australia won the one-day international tri-series by defeating England by 112 runs in the final played at Perth. Glenn Maxwell scored 95 and took 4-46 in the final to spur Australia to this emphatic win. He led Australia to 278-8 as it batted first after losing the toss, then had the opportunity of a hat-trick as it bowled out England for 166. Current ODI World Cup holders India was the third team of this tri-series .
