  • India has been ranked 4th out of 167 countries in the 2016 Global Slavery Index. The list is topped by North Korea, followed by Uzbekistan, Cambodia, India and Qatar.
  • World Environment Day (WED) is observed every year on June 5 to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth. This year’s theme for World Environment Day is ‘Join the race to make the world a better place’.
  • The world’s longest and deepest rail tunnel has officially opened in Switzerland. It is a 57km (35­mile) twin­bore Gotthard base tunnel will provide a high­ speed rail link under the Swiss Alps between northern and southern Europe.

National: 

  • Union Government approves 7th pay commissions. Salaries and pensions for former and current central government employees will go up by  23.5 percent.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a 500 million dollars loan to build a bridge across the Ganga River in Bihar. The loan funds will be used to build 9.8 km road bridge in Bihar on the Ganga River. On completion of the project it will be the India’s longest river bridge.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the center’s flagship Smart City mission in 20 cities across the country from Pune, involving 83 projects in the country.
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched a record 20 satellites in a single mission from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-34 has carried India’s latest earth observation satellite Cartosat-2 along with 19 co-passengers.
  • Union Government relaxed Foreign Direct Investment policies and approved 100% FDI in the sectors such as Defence and Civil aviation.
  • India’s first women fighter pilots were commissioned in the Indian Air Force today. Flying cadets Bhawana Kath, Avani Chatuvedi and Mohana Singh are the first batch of female pilots inducted in an IAF fighter squadron.
  • A 0.5 per cent Krishi Kalyan Cess (KKC) wil be applied on all services which will increases the total tax chargeable on services to 15 per cent.

  • South Korean author, Han Kang, has won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize for her novel ‘The Vegetarian’. The Vegetarian, a novel about a woman who “wants to reject human brutality” and gives up eating meat.
  • Indian movie ‘The Violin Player’ has won the Best Feature Film at the 37th Durban International Film Festival.
  • IIFA awards 2016 held at Spain. Ranveer Singh has won the best actor award for Bajirao Mastani, Deepika Padukone bagged the best actress award for her performance in Piku. Best movie award given to Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
  • At the 88th Academy Awards, “Spotlight,” the film about the Boston Globe’s investigation into priest abuse, won for best picture.

Sports:

  • World Number One tennis player Novak Djokovic from Serbia has won the 2016 French Open title in the men’s singles category. In the final match, Djokovic defeated Britain’s Andy Murray.
  • Leander Paes (India) and Martina Hingis (Switzerland) pair won the Mixed doubles title of 2016 French Open. In the final, they defeated Sania Mirza (India) and Ivan Dodig (Croatia) pair.
  • Garbine Muguruza (Spain) won the Women’s singles title of 2016 French Open. In the final she defeated Serena Williams (United States).
  • Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal defeat Sun Yu of China 11­-21, 21-­14, 21­-19 in the final to clinch the Australian Open Super Series Badminton title 2016.
  • The Chile national football team has won the 2016 Copa America Football tournament by defeating Argentina in a penalty shootout at New Jersey, United States.
  • Anil Kumble has been appointed as coach for the Indian Cricket team for next one year.
