There are many words we use incorrectly, and I’ll try to discuss some of the most flagrant ones. Of course I’ll discuss only one or two in each post.

although, though, but and however

The difference between these words is something I’m asked quite often. So let’s take care of this.

All these words show contrast, but there are nuances (minor differences) that we need to be aware of.

1 although and though

These two words are usually used as conjunctions, and they are mostly interchangeable. However, though is a little less formal. They show contrast:

Although/though I haven’t watched the movie, I know the complete story.

I like Sam, although/though I admit he is an idiot.

We can use though (not although) as an adverb (often at the end of a sentence), to mean ‘however’.

Like the movie? Yes, bit long, though

The main reason, though, is hidden from us.

2 but and however

These two words convey almost the same meaning of contrast.

I haven’t watched the movie, but I know the complete story.

I haven’t watched the movie. However, I know the complete story.

I like Sam, but I admit he is an idiot.

I like Sam; however I admit he is an idiot.

Remember that but is a conjunction, and however is an adverb. So whereas but joins phrases or clauses in the same sentence, however needs to start a new sentence. That is why however will always come after a full stop or a semi-colon.

Also, however should always have a comma on its either side. Of course, if it starts a clause, there will be only be a comma after it, and if it ends a clause, then the comma will only precede it.

However, we need to be patient.

We, however, need to be patient.

We need to be patient, however.
