Denmark’s Mogens Lykketoft elected as President of UN General Assembly
The UN General Assembly elected Denmark’s Mogens Lykketoft as its President for a one-year term. Lykketoft, presently speaker of the Danish Parliament, will preside over the 193-member UN body’s upcoming 70th session and succeeds Uganda’s Sam Kutesa. He will begin his Presidency in September at the commencement of the 70th General Assembly session.
Britain celebrated 800th anniversary of Magna Carta
United Kingdom (UK) celebrated 800 years of signing of Magna Carta on 15 June 2015. The Magna Carta’s symbolic role as the “touchstone for human rights and modern democracy”. Magna Carta is a Latin word which in English means Great Charter. Magna Carta had laid the first steps towards parliamentary democracy and the principle supremacy of law i.e. no one is above the law. It also laid the principle of balance of power between the governed and government.
Robin nominated as United Kingdom’s first-ever national bird
The red-breasted “Robin” bird topped a poll of more than 200,000 people to choose the UK’s first national bird. The poll was launched by noted ornithologist David Lindo. Lindo began the project last year when he realised Britain did not have a national bird, unlike countries such as India (Peacock), US (Bald Eagle) and Australia (Emu).
Nadal becomes 1st man to win titles on both clay and grass surface after winning Stuttgart Open
Spaniard Rafael Nadal becomes the first man to win titles at the event on both clay and grass surface as he was crowned champion after defeating Serbian Viktor Troicki in the Single’s final of the Stuttgart Open. Nadal had claimed Stuttgart titles on clay in 2005 and 2007 and he won today at the newly established grass surface.
Harbhajan Singh became 9th highest wicket-taker in Test Cricket
Indian off-spin cricketer Harbhajan Singh became the ninth all-time highest Test wicket-takers by claiming 416 wickets in 102 matches. In this process, he surpassed Pakistani legend Wasim Akram who stood at the ninth position with 414 wickets in 104 matches.
