Andhra Pradesh govt approves Amaravathi as new state capital
The Andhra Pradesh cabinet on Wednesday approved “Amaravathi” as the name of the new capital city of the State. It is situated on the right bank of the mighty Krishna River in Guntur district of the state. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced that by naming the new capital after the Satavahana empire’s birth place. Amaravathi means the City of Gods or in other words, an immortal city. it was ruled by Lord Indira. Satavahanas, who ruled the country way back in 230 BCE, made it their capital.
Kotak Mahindra, ING Vysya merger gets RBI approval
Kotak Mahindra Bank has received the Reserve Bank of India’s approval for acquiring ING Vysya Bank, making Kotak the fourth largest private lender in the country. An RBI statement said, “All the branches of ING Vysya Bank will function as branches of Kotak Mahindra Bank with effect from April 1, 2015.”
Gulshan Rai takes charge as India’s first cyber security chief
Gulshan Rai on 1 April 2015 took charge as India’s first cyber security chief under the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as Special Secretary for cyber security. Prior to this appointment, he was Director-General Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) at the Department of Electronics and Information Technology. Rai has considerable experience in dealing with matters such as cyber security, e-Governance, legal framework and the Information Technology Act.
Muhammadu Buhari elected as Nigeria’s President
Former military ruler Genral Muhammadu Buhari won the Presidential election in Nigeria. He defeated incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan by more than two million votes. In this election Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) party has received around 15,424,921 votes and Jonathan’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has recieved 12,853,162 votes.
Farida Khambata is Tata Sons’ first woman director
Tata Sons, promoter of the major operating Tata companies, appointed top-ranked investment strategist Farida Khambata as the first woman independent director in the company’s 103-year history.
International Cricket Council President Mustafa Kamal Resigns
Mustafa Kamal, the ICC president, has resigned from his position, saying his decision was “in protest [against] those who worked unconstitutionally, and for the greater good of cricket.”
